As counselors, it is our job to destigmatize labels and show that labeling is not always negative. When students are struggling academically in school, teachers, school counselors and other staff work together to figure out what is preventing them from succeeding academically. Another stigma of counseling with Latina/os is labeling in the educational setting. Many families worry about labels and how they can potentially negatively affect their child.
Future research should continue to examine the effects of policy changes and their enforcement after the election. News programs and news apps are designed to hook people into coming back for more. Bad news even it turns out to be wrong is a powerful hook that draws people back. Bad news increases the use of the apps and news program viewers which translates into more revenue for the bad news brokers. This interactive workshop covers key components of campaign fundraising, including special emphasis on understanding why people give and the in-person “ask”.

In our analysis of all US births from 2009 to 2017, we found a significant upward level shift in the number of preterm births among US Latina women that coincided with the 2016 US presidential election. This result appeared most pronounced for infants conceived or in their second trimester of gestation near the time of the election. We found this evidence despite our conservative analytic approach, which controlled for potential concurrent but unrelated trends that might affect preterm birth. In other words, we observed an increase in Latina preterm births over and above levels expected from preterm birth in the general population. We also controlled for cycles and trends specific to preterm births among Latina women that could induce spurious associations in a simple, before-and-after study design.

You walk into a Latino family party and you’re sure to get a dozen hugs and kisses on the cheek. This means that when people look at your sexy Latin lover and think she’s only good for “that,” it isn’t just because ofModern Family and Desperate Housewives. There are real-life obstacles for Latina women to develop their careers and ambitions.
Clearly, this is a sensitive, emotionally charged topic for these women. While they were willing to discuss their instances of successful resistance to sexual exploitation in a public forum such as focus group, as is understandable, no instances of succumbing to pressure were recounted. However, given the frequency that the topic was brought up, one has to wonder whether successful resistance is the exception or the rule. Rather than accommodating pregnant workers, some employers find it easier to simply fire them—sometimes in anticipation of problems rather than any actual diminishment of workload. As the above quote indicates, there is a strong—almost defiant—sense of pride in working harder and faster than their native-born Black or White coworkers, especially among more recent immigrants.

Maternal race/ethnicity was classified in accordance with the 1997 Office of Management and Budget standards.28 Covariates included monthly counts of male and female preterm births to non-Latina women as well as term births to Latina women. We defined gestational age based on the date of the last menstrual period to ensure consistency across time.
Furthermore, they are unaccustomed to, if not uncomfortable with, the cultural norms for women in the United States. Many suffer emotional distress from being removed from their traditional social network of immediate and extended family in their home countries. No matter how you slice the data, it is clear that there is a lot of work to be done to improve the standard of living for Latinas and their families. More educational attainment and access to better quality education would certainly help to improve the Latinas’ chances to move up the job ladder and get better paid jobs. However, this is not the whole story, since even after controlling for education, the wage gap remains very large.
One location represents a new destination for Latino immigrants and has virtually no Spanish-speaking infrastructure. The other location has a Latino community several centuries old and an extensive Spanish-speaking infrastructure. Immigrants reaching these two destinations tend to do so by following different immigration streams. Despite initial expectations to the contrary, the researchers coding the transcripts of these groups could discern no meaningful differences between any of the groups on these issues. The findings from these focus groups clearly indicate that Latina immigrants encounter a complex web of stressors impacting them both as workers and as women.
The state with the highest rate of female imprisonment is Oklahoma and the state with the lowest incarceration rates of females is Massachusetts . Though many more men are in prison than women, the rate of growth for female imprisonment has been twice as high as that of men since 1980. Between 1980 and 2017, the number of incarcerated women increased by more than 750%, rising from a total of 26,378 in 1980 to 225,060 in 2017. Over the past quarter century, there has been a profound change in the involvement of women within the criminal justice system.
While I realize that there are always exceptions, would you say that the vast majority feel this way? Unfortunately, in this day and age this way of approaching relationships seems to be so very hard to find. I won’t take reasonability for “these articles” because I’ve written only one article about being Latina where I specifically open on how not everyone is the same.

For most pregnant women, the body adjusts, and the pancreas produces more insulin. However, if the pancreas can’t keep up with the need, it can cause high blood sugar. Gestational diabetes mellitus is a form of high blood sugar that happens, and is first recognized, during pregnancy. We help women achieve their ambitions and work to create an equal world.
